Our History and Dedication to Land Stewardship

The legendary collections and harvests made by Native American Seed are used by land owners and managers, farmers and ranchers, school teachers and government agencies, architects and landscape contractors, home gardeners and environmental restorationists. Native American Seed, a descendant and successor sprouted its first roots in Flower Mound, Texas, near the intersection of post oak forests in the sandy Cross Timbers ...and the heavy gumbo clays of the Blackland Tallgrass Prairies. In the 1970's at the age of 19, entrepreneur Bill Neiman had already founded his first business, Neiman Environments Inc. Borrowing a shovel, rake and lawn mower, the young man ventured to establish a design-build landscape construction company including a productive tree farm, retail nursery and greenhouse operation.

Seeking to learn through self education, trial and error, and then leading others by example and hard work, Neiman's Nursery and Landscape Construction Company soon built a wide reputation of creating naturally beautiful outdoor environments. By paying close attention to detail and building upon the free flowing lines of nature, many of these decades old landscapes are still sustaining.

Then after droughts, floods and freezes of the early 1980's, a new reality began to take shape within the family business. No longer was it practical to continue introducing aliens within the harsh climate ...plants such as Asian jasmine, Chinese holly, Indian hawthorn, Pakistan crepe myrtle, African bermuda and Caribbean St Augustine grass. With an eye towards water conservation, low maintenance and organic land management practices, Neiman discovered the absolute simplicity of how native plants work.

Native American Seed was born in the fall of 1988. With the dedicated help of his bride Jan, sales commenced of wildflower seeds hand collected from nearby prairie remnants. Building upon longterm successes of integrating native prairie plants into the urban landscape, a vision emerged to cover ever more ground. Texas' hot summers and shortages of fresh water combined with loss of open space and native habitat faster than any state in the US, conventional landscaping with alien plants became a thing of the past.

In 1995, a farm was acquired on the Llano River in west central Texas. Recognizing the need to strategically locate within an intersection of many eco regions, Native American Seed embarked upon enlarging the establishment of it's seed-source farming and harvesting operations. Since that time, the Neiman children have all grown up, only to come back and revive the farm in preparation for the next generations.

Today, Native American Seed is a brand that identifies a family of seeds, seed mixtures, restorative tools and cultural information. With an extraordinary tradition of helping people restore the earth, we openly share our ideas and experience. Over time, it is our hope to help you release the powerful energy stored within native seeds.

The legend continues toward the future. Realities of increased water shortages, exponential land fragmentation and intensifying climate changes have become the new norm. Wildlife and native habitat await your helping hands to restore, not only for nature's sake, but for your own. Capture and seize upon these challenging times.Join in the story. You will influence how it turns out. In the end, it is really only up to the people ...just like you.

With Native American Seed, once again the age-old gesture of sowing good seeds upon the land can connect our modern nomadism to the local human community.
